I have been a professional firefighter for over 35 years.
I have witnessed first hand the consequences of repeated exposure to traumatic events. As firefighters, we repeatedly attend rescues, fires, motor vehicle accidents and other traumatic events, and carry the responsibility of resolving these incidents and helping others, often through the worst day of their life. While a privilege, it is also a curse. We may witness human suffering in the extreme. It has taken its toll on the mental wellbeing of my work colleagues and friends, and some have been debilitated by PTSD and rendered incapable of continuing in a profession they have held with passion and conviction.
I'm standing up to join Team Black Dog to turn ground breaking research into life saving action.
Mental illness affects 1 in 5 Australians every year, with the most common being depression and anxiety. Mental illness doesn’t discriminate. It affects people from all walks of life — individuals, families, workplaces and communities.
I'm inspired by the work of Black Dog Institute and want to support them by raising money as part of my participation in Black Dog Institute's Hike for Mental Health: Kokoda 2023.
