Help me make it meaningful

On the 22nd of June I will be attempting to run & walk over 100miles in 24hr hours around an athletics track. I will be putting one foot in front of the other to honour and remember those who have lost their lives battling mental illness. I will be running to raise awareness and shine a light on the daily challenges people living with mental illness endure. And finally I will be running to raise money for the black dog institute which do crucial mental health research and provide support services that help Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide.

I’ll be honest this is a distance that strikes just as much fear into me as it does excitement. Nothing is guaranteed attempting a run like this but I’m willing to put it all out there challenging my body, mind & spirit to make a point.

What’s my point?
My point is ordinary people who develop mental illness often suffer indescribable physiological pain which is then amplified by the stigma. As individuals we can make a difference through leaning in, holding space without judgement and asking our loved ones what they need.

As a collective we still have a way to go in how we support people with a mental illness and personally I have learned much on my journey the past couple of years working in mental health, undertaking training and my own lived experience I feel encouraged and obliged to speak up.

I will be running to honour my good friends Jacques Djedid & Jesse Ishai, two beautiful souls with big hearts and iconic laughs!

They both lost their lives the past couple of years from their own battles with mental illness. I witnessed first-hand the struggle, stigma, isolation and the challenges they experienced.

I will be running to honour my mates, their families and other people across the globe that are impacted by mental health illnesses such as anxiety, depression, bipolar, schizophrenia and co-occurring diseases such as addiction.

The 24hr run is not just about me, Jesse or Jacques. 1-5 Australians will experience mental illness throughout their life time so this is about anyone who has been touched by the loss of a loved one battling mental illness, those who still suffer and for anyone who wants to get involved in raising some awareness and/or challenging yourself physically. (If you have a loved one you miss and want to post a photo in the comments to honour them I invite you to do that, reach out to me and come down to walk/run a few laps to share your story)

I’ve deliberately chosen to run during the winter solstice to represent perseverance through the longest and darkest night of the year and I have asked friends and family to support me through running/walking alongside at various stages so I’m not alone on my journey, I thought this would be quite symbolic.

The journey may be daunting, long, unpredictable and dark. The journey may have highs and lows, be uncomfortable and overwhelming at times, but there is beauty in the struggle and we don’t have to do the journey alone.
