The Black Dog Institute is dedicated to understanding, preventing and treating mental illness.
Our vision is a mentally healthier world.
We are about creating a world where mental illness is treated with the same level of concern, immediacy and seriousness as physical illness.
1 in 5 Australians will experience a mental health condition within the year. And 60% of people don't seek help for mental health conditions.
We aim to improve the lives of people affected by mental illness by:
- translating our ground-breaking research into real-world clinical care
- delivering evidence-based education programs for health professionals, schools and workplaces
- developing real-time digital tools, so people can manage depression, anxiety and stress at their own pace.
Get involved. Create a meaningful moment for mental health.

What we do
Black Dog Institute is a global leader in mental health research and the only Medical Research Institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan.
Our unique translational approach allows us to quickly turn our world-class scientific findings into clinical services, educational programs and e-health products that improve the lives of people with mental illness.
On average, there is a 17 year gap for research evidence to reach clinical practice. With research, development, education and implementation teams working closely side-by-side, Black Dog Institute closes substantially this research to practice gap.
We work directly in all parts of the community as well as guiding the development of new and improved policy. We place focus on those with specific mental health needs like young people, Indigenous communities, men, and high-risk workforces.
