A mighty big shoutout to John Wadey for his tireless work organizing this event. We couldn’t do it without you, John! The fundraising and sales have been spearheaded by John, speaking to local businesses, and we’ve also been greatly helped by the Rotary Club. We are also honored to have been extended a fantastic interview opportunity with Peter Hunt from Bribie Radio. Peter’s a good bloke who’s interested in what we do, and we’re really excited to share our journey with him.
Joining me on the radio will be my best mate, Trev Kilkenny. Together, we’ll be sharing our experiences and the importance of our mission.
As part of this effort, we’re banding together and callin' on all our members to reach out if they know anyone who might be a pirate and could help share our story even further. We would greatly appreciate any recommendations to get this incredible event out there.
If anyone in our community has been touched by suicide, it would be wonderful if we could all band together to support those who have been affected. Our network is strong, and by reaching out, we can help each other in times of need. Please also remember to use our Headspace chat in the Facebook group if you ever need someone to talk to.
Some sobering statistics: suicide is a leading cause of death in Australia, with men being three times more likely to die by suicide than women. For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, the rate of suicide is nearly twice that of non-Indigenous Australians. These numbers highlight the critical need for support and prevention efforts.
We pay our highest respects to the Gubbi Gubbi people, the traditional custodians of the land we cherish. I’ve worked in Aboriginal communities for years, and some of my closest friends—Michelle Major, Michael Yam, Jaiden and Zane Gilbert and Taylor Edwards —stand beside me on this journey. They are passionate about looking after the land, and it would be fantastic to link the Kowanyama community with the Gubbi Gubbi community in some way through this fundraiser. I personally acknowledge the three tribes in Kowanyama: the kokomenjenna, Kokoberra and Kunjin mob. Also Boxy Oriners Mob.
The funds raised will be donated to the Black Dog Institute, supporting suicide prevention.
We also want to say a big thank you to Mangrove Jack for all the insight he has provided to our fishermen and potential fishermen in the Bribie and Sunshine Coast areas and the surrounding Pumicestone Passage region.
Let’s band together as the Pumicestone Passage Pirates and show our support for this vital cause. Your generosity and participation can truly make a difference – just like the perfect cast net for prawns, the perfect flick of the plastic in the mangroves, or the perfectly presented worm/yab/livey. Let’s make this perfect to reel in some dollars for fathers and suicide prevention.
Excitin' times ahead! Don’t forget our upcoming Father’s Day fundraiser, and keep an eye out for our new crab pots, soon to be available.
Be sure to visit our website at pumicestonepassagepirates.com.au and subscribe to our mailing list to catch up on all of our blog posts, important hints, and tips. Don’t miss Mangrove Jack’s “Starting Out” series—a comprehensive guide on how to catch fish in the Pumicestone Passage.
Together, let’s make waves for a great cause! And remember, the best bait for a big catch is a cold beer and a good heart. 🍻🌊
Cheers,
Shane
