G’day all,
Five years ago my best mate took his own life. This affected many people in many different ways.
How did it affect me? 
It didn’t. 
Not one little bit, I thought. 
I was completely numb and continued life on auto-pilot, ignoring the painful thoughts like they didn’t exist, putting them in the too-hard basket. I didn’t think it could happen to me. 
Then, earlier this year, these thoughts consumed me. I had no energy to do anything.
I didn’t exercise. I didn’t sleep. 
I didn’t enjoy the things I once did. 
I was pretending everything was fine when it wasn’t. 
I hit rock bottom.
Then I did the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. I picked up the phone, called a Mental Health Service, and asked for help.

Since then, I’ve opened up to my mates about my mental health. I aim to break the stigma around people feeling unable to say ‘I’m not ok’ when someone asks them how they are. 

Dan would be 27 on the 18th of November. My friend Sam and I will be running 27km on that day to raise awareness and funds for men’s mental health. We are in the middle of our goal of running at least 10km a day for the month of November. Wish us luck!
