Help me create a mentally healthier world
I'm standing up to join Team Black Dog to turn ground breaking research into life saving action.
Mental illness affects 1 in 5 Australians every year, with the most common being depression and anxiety. Mental illness doesn’t discriminate. It affects people from all walks of life — individuals, families, workplaces and communities.
I'm riding 3,139 Km with 1 Km for every person that took their own life in Australia and in hopes we can make a difference and reduce this number by helping any way we can with every dollar we can raise.

My Updates

I Am Back In 2025
Friday 15th Nov We did an incredible job in 2022; you supported me through all 3,139 Km of my epic ride. But we need to do more, so the bike is back. Join me on Esperanza (Spanish for "Hope") my trusty Specialized Tarmac SL6 for another epic ride to raise badly-needed funds to support Black Dog Institute and the incredible life-saving work it does. The Finish Line Is In Sight!
Monday 31st Oct After an epic weekend with amazing weather, I managed to pick off more than 500 Km of riding by getting out three times Saturday and twice Sunday. With this morning's ride of just under 50 Km, we've got just barely more than 40 Km to go to hit the target.
Back on the road!
Friday 28th Oct We’ve got a long way to go and a short time to get there. Knocked off another 100+ this afternoon with a fixed bike and fresh legs off a few days of (involuntary) rest. Let’s do this!!!
Temporarily Offline
Tuesday 25th Oct Folks, we're temporarily offline due to a mechanical issue which I am doing everything I can to resolve as quickly as possible. Not ideal, given the weather lately and the ever-fewer days to go. I'll keep you updated as much as I can. Share
We're In The Home Stretch Now!
Wednesday 19th Oct Day 19: First of all, a MASSIVE thank you to everyone that has donated! Your generous donation will make a huge difference for the good people at Black Dog Institute that are helping others every day! You're awesome!I think the sync between this page at my Strava is a bit off; I haven't done 2,244 Km, but I have completed 2,098.48 Km with 1,040.52 Km to go. Just the same, I'm well on target and have some time in the bank in case I lose a day or two to weather.
Yesterday evening (Tuesday) I finally passed 2,000 Km, and as of this morning, am so close to getting under 1,000 Km to go - just a short 40.52 Km away from it, and then we're in the sprint to the finish on October 31.
The first few days were tough because while I regularly rode 50+ Km a day, doubling that has been a challenge. While I had the time to do it on the weekend, the work day meant breaking it up into two rides with one before work, and one after work. It was hard to get going again later in the day after being up from just after 4:00 AM and riding 70+ Km, but after a week or so, was able to add 40, 50, 60, and now even 70 Km after work to make for some days of 120, 130, and 140+ Km.
No flats... yet, and few close calls, thankfully. Lots of angry magpies and butcherbirds, although my routes really have very few on them - but the ones that are make up for it! Riding after dark does eliminate that issue, though.
Hopefully the weather isn't as severe as expected because while I will ride in the rain, a downpour and slippery roads are not a cyclist's friends!
Let's get this done! Stay safe out there. Share

Another Milestone - 1,000 Km Ridden
Tuesday 11th Oct As of Monday, October 10, I passed 1,000 Km ridden for October and am getting closer to having less than 2,000 Km left in the next day or so with 1,139 the next target just a short 62 Km or so away. Sunday was a rest day and a chance to reflect and renew the drive to see this thing to the end.At the current pace, I should hit the halfway mark of 1,569.5 Km by this weekend barring any incidents.
I'll soon post up a video about my bike and the various tech I use to stay safe and ride the distances I do every day. Share

Day 6 and a milestone
Thursday 6th Oct
So far, aside from some rain Sunday, it's been a good run of weather to date. A bit cool perhaps, some wind, but really good riding weather that isn't either too warm or cold. Plenty of angry birds around (magpies and butcherbirds) but lots of routes to select from to avoid the real hotspots. Lots of ducks with their ducklings, too, but aside from getting quacked at, just give them space with the little fluffballs!
Nice to see many others out on the trails every day, although when I get going around 5:00 AM, I largely have the roads and trails to myself. Also notice a lot of people commuting into the city from a fair ways out!
Cycling has been a salvation for me and a great way to start the day, decompress, and clear my mind plus deal with stress when it all gets a bit much. Hopefully the donations here will go a long way to helping others the way my bike helps me!
Stay safe out there! Share

Day 4, 2 Rides, Tracking Well!
Tuesday 4th Oct Managed to get out for two rides today: one before work for 72 Km and one after work for another 51 Km. Feeling good, tracking well, and a huge thanks to everyone that donated so far! Thank you so much! Share
Cool, clear, and sunny. What a day!
Monday 3rd Oct
The KMs are adding up and so are the amazing donations from so many fantastic people! Thank you so much! Black Dog Institute will put this money towards helping so many people! Share

Cold and Wet Ride, But So Satisfying
Sunday 2nd Oct

First Ride!
Saturday 1st Oct

We Ride At Dawn!
Friday 30th Sep We ride at dawn! Seriously, though, this epic challenge kicks off first thing Saturday morning, October 1, and over the next 31 days, I will ride 3,139 Km in support of Black Dog Institute to raise funds for understanding, preventing and treating mental illness. So, why 3,139? Why not an even number? 3,139 is, according to the ABS, the number of people that took their own lives in Australia.
That's nearly 9 people every day. Every. Single. Day. We lose, on average 9 friends, brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, colleagues, and every description of person you can imagine, from every walk of life.
To date, we have already raised $557 of the target $3,139! You're all awesome! Thank you so much!
I'll be taking a break from my usual cybersecurity blogs and posts, and instead providing updates along the way, maybe taking on some side challenges (like Sober October).
I'll also put a playlist up on my YouTube channel with some ride videos like timelapse videos, maybe some rides where it's just me, my bike, and the road sharing my thoughts, and of course, maybe a little levity along the way (it is Magpie Swooping Season after all!)
Stay safe out there!

Best of luck Logan! Truly great initiative. I’m glad mental health awareness has been raised significantly during covid but there’s still many who are afraid to talk about it. Thankyou for continuing the awareness
