On the 15th of May I will be swimming the South Head Roughwater, a 10k marathon swim from Bondi Beach to Watsons Bay. I am swimming solo and in support of the Black Dog Institute who are turn ground breaking research into life saving action.
Mental illness affects 1 in 5 Australians every year, with the most common being depression and anxiety. Mental illness doesn’t discriminate. It affects people from all walks of life — individuals, families, workplaces and communities.

COMPLETED
Monday 16th May
Yesterday I completed the south head roughwater swim.
We swum in difficult conditions with the currents against us. It was one of the slowest conditions the swim has ever seen.
I expected to complete in around 3 hours, but I ended up in the ocean for just over 4 hours. At times it felt like we weren’t moving.
In summary:
- 10.07km distance travelled
- 14km swum
- 6300 strokes
- 4 hours duration
- Ocean temp 21c
- 16,626 kj burned
- 3,900 calories burned
- 1.5l of water drunk, 3 energy gels consumed
- 1 jellyfish sting
- 1 shark sighting
Yes I felt like quitting on and off from about the 4 k mark, but knowing the cause I was swimming for, and for my excellent support crew (including my wife Portia Bridges!) made me carry on. Things got very painful at about 8.5kms, but there were very calm conditions at the finish and my paddler stayed right next to me the whole way home.
