I'm standing up to join Team Black Dog to turn ground breaking research into life saving action for LGBTQI+ kids.
Research has identified that young LGBTQI+ people aged between 16 and 27 are five times more likely to make a suicide attempt, while transgender people aged 18 and over are nearly 11 times more likely. The impacts of minority stress, stigma, violence and abuse, coupled structural and systemic inequalities, are just some of the factors contributing to poorer mental health outcomes within LGBTQI+ communities.
In Australia, there remains a chronic shortage of mental health and suicide prevention services designed to meet the needs of LGBTQI+ communities. Mainstream services are often ill-equipped to provide culturally safe and affirmative support, whilst specialist services can be difficult to access, particularly in remote regional areas , and may not be the preferred option for young people to seek help.
The Black Dog Institute focus research on:
- Developing multi-level frameworks for for community-wide suicide prevention programs;
- integrating lived experience into all aspects of their research, knowledge translation and interventions;
- testing technology solutions in healthcare, school and community settings to increase reach, access and timelines;
- extending research capacity in suicide prevention by training new researchers;
- fostering data systems that will provide actionable insights to prevent suicide risk.
Suicide is the number 1 cause of death for people aged between 15 and 44 in Australia, with LGBTQI+ more likely to die by suicide.
