Ian’s Ironman 70.3

By Ian Harwood Join Me

Help me make it meaningful

Some of you may already know, but the last few months has been a very tough time for me and my family with two family members falling victim to suicide. The first in May was a family member in the UK, and the day of her funeral was the day I received a call to say a member of my in-law’s had gone missing, resulting to the same fate.

This month we had Suicide Prevention Week, and RU Ok Day, which is often led by the corporate world. I often question the relevance of the the branded cup cakes, and the wrist bands, and wonder whether these actually make a difference to prevent someone taking their own life. Having been lucky not to have suffered from mental health myself, it has been difficult to understand the battles many people face, but I think I finally understand the relevance of these initiatives now: to acknowledge how big an issue this really is!

So how can I help?

Well I would like to raise some money to help organisations that do understand the issues, and that have helped my family grapple with the loss over the last few months.

On the 3rd December I will be participating in the Ironman 70.3. This is a 1.9km swim, a 90km bike ride, followed by a 21.1km half marathon run. I would like to do this event in the honour of my family members, and the three friends that I have also lost to suicide throughout my 20s and 30s, where perhaps it may have had different outcomes had the support of charities such as Black Dog Institute been as prevalent as they are now.

Black Dog Institute is an amazing charity which helps with research and support for those affected by suicide and mental health. So please dig deep and generously donate, and send me your well wishes on the 3rd December as I begin to weigh up why I just didn’t buy more cupcakes instead of swimming, biking and running around Australia’s South West!
