Our mother struggled greatly throughout her life living with Bipolar disorder. Nonetheless she carried her life with kindness, dignity and everlasting love. 

Your donation will help black dog research new treatment options, so more people will be able to live happy and healthy lives.

Many Australians suffer from bipolar disorder. There are two kinds of bipolar disorder. Bipolar I disorder is when the person experiences oscillating manic (extreme ‘highs’, often with psychotic features) and depressive episodes. Bipolar II disorder is when the person experiences oscillating hypomanic (less severe ‘highs’ with no psychotic features) and depressive episodes. 

Bipolar I disorder may be experienced by up to 1% of Australians over their lifetime. The lifetime risk of Bipolar II disorder is up to 5%. 

Black Dog Institute is the only medical research institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan. In particular, it conducts research into bipolar disorder and provides resources to assist individuals and their families to manage bipolar disorder.
