Help me make it meaningful
Hi! I'm Michael, I'm an exercise physiologist and powerlifting coach with a keen interest in supporting the mental health of the community through exercise via my business; Be You Exercise Physiology and Coaching.
My vision for Be You Coaching is to promote health and wellness through physical activity and community growth. We pride ourselves in creating an inclusive environment for strength training, no matter our abilities. Mental health feeds into our ability to maintain physical health and vice versa, part of this leads into the idea around hosting a Squat Only Powerlifting Competition.
Mental illness doesn’t discriminate – it affects 1 in 5 Australians every year with symptoms like depression and anxiety. The impact can be devastating, not only for those living with it, but for those around them.
The Squat Only Competition (Dawn of the Squat) takes from a popular pre-existing competition "Night of the Deadlift" and aims to support the phrase "When the world is on our shoulders, what can we do to stand up?". A powerlifting competition not only embraces the strength and drive we have but also provides the support we can draw from - the crowd, spotters, loaders, other volunteers, and competitors.
That’s why I’m raising funds for the Black Dog Institute, to support crucial mental health research and support services that help Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide.
All proceeds from athlete entry tickets to the competition will go to the Black Dog Institute however any other donation, big or small, is greatly appreciated.
Happy lifting!
