In June 2019, my brother-in-law, Troy, lost his long battle with mental illness. He had the biggest heart—always looking out for others, rescuing stray animals, and bringing joy wherever he went. He also had a deep love for sport, especially riding - though his passion was for motorbikes.
Mental health can be torture. It doesn’t discriminate. No one is immune and it doesn’t give us time to train or prepare. It can hit suddenly, and those affected - along with their families and friends - are thrown into an almost incomprehensible battle they never saw coming. Watching a loved one struggle, feeling helpless, and not knowing how to support them can be overwhelming. Some face this battle for a short time, but for many it’s a lifelong challenge.
To honour Troy’s spirit, all those who continue the daily fight against this torment and those who choose every day to support their loved ones, I have decided to push myself beyond my comfort zone and do a solo ride from South Australia to Victoria. I’m not a seasoned cyclist. 100km is the furthest I’ve ridden so far, but this journey isn’t just about pushing myself through the physical challenge. It’s about raising awareness for those who struggle with mental illness every day - without preparation, without warning, and often without support.
Mental illness affects 1 in 5 Australians each year, yet its impact ripples far beyond that. That’s why I’m riding to support the Black Dog Institute, funding critical mental health research and support services for those in need.

Saturday 22nd Mar While we were in Dimboola, we stopped by the local pub for dinner and met a lovely couple from Perth, Michelle and Steven (I think those were their names), who offered to take a picture for us. As we chatted, I mentioned that I was riding to raise funds for The Black Dog Institute. After grabbing their drinks, they kindly made a donation and shared that they had lost a cousin to suicide, emphasizing how important every contribution is. We continued our conversation, reflecting on how tragically common suicide has become. The harsh reality is that I haven’t met anyone who hasn’t been affected by the loss of someone to suicide. It’s time for us to work toward changing this.Share
