Help me make it meaningful

Mental illness doesn’t discriminate – it affects 1 in 5 Australians every year with symptoms like depression and anxiety. The impact can be devastating, not only for those living with it, but for those around them.

That’s why we're getting active and raising funds for the Black Dog Institute - to support crucial mental health research and support services that help Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide.

Help us create a meaningful moment for mental health as we work up a sweat, all for a great cause.

Please donate now. Thank you.

Lake Burley Griffin Walk

Sunday 20th Oct
This morning in Canberra a few brethren from Lodge Commonwealth of Australia 633 met at the Lake in Canberra to support The Black Dog Institute and it's fundraising for mental health.

Although there were only few, the quality of the brethren and ladies present were of high calibre. The sitting Worshipful Master Nick Hill, The Incoming Worshipful Master Elect Brother Robert O'Donnell and last but not least PDGM Right Worshipful Brother Graeme Moller. Along with Mrs Alison Moller and Mrs Gerardine Hill.

None could say that the weather was not perfect for walking conditions and it seemed to have performed spectacularly for the walking party.

As this event was part of The Black Dog Institutes fundraiser for mental health.

It was a great morning which was finished with coffee close by to the Carillion. We appreciate all donations and to those who have already supported our pledge to raise $1500 by the end of October 2024.

First walk

Thursday 10th Oct
First walk today with my wife and our 2 dogs. A fairly short walk only 5kms but gotta start somewhere. It might be just baby steps but at least it's a step in the right direction.

I've certainly had my struggles and one of the biggest factors of my recovery has been educating myself while getting the right type of help when I needed it. Mental health is no longer something that should not be discussed, and swept under the rug. Luckily in the past couple of decades, there has been great improvement in awareness and services, along with people telling their stories which helps reduce the stigma around mental health issues.

Mental health is now something for everyone to take care of, it's the same as the word "diet". Diet is actually what food and drinks we usually consume day to day, and having a healthy diet and what you put in your body is no different to "mental health" and what we tell ourselves and what media we consume, what books do we read, what movies do we watch, what type of friends do we entertain and a massive one of how we treat ourselves. One of my favourite quotes is to Treat yourself like someone you are responsible for helping".
I like this quote because I've heard far too much of "treat others the way you want to be treated", which is true and good but sometimes we forget ourselves in that picture...

It is well documented that exercise is great for mental health and from my personal experience it certainly is. Already feeling less tired and less stressed. Hoping to increase KMs tomorrow while working on building more healthy habits. Until next time...
