Ben's story

Thursday 17th Nov
On December 11, 2002 Benjamin Chapman followed through with his plan to take his own life. This was his second attempt in a matter of days and and after he discharged from an inpatient mental health unit a day prior. Our lives changed forever after this day. 

Since then, my family fought for change to the mental health system, so no family had to live through what we lived through. Change did take place and there was a reform of the mental health system and the Mental Health Act was introduced on 2007. 

I, Rebecca, pursued a Bachelor of Social Work degree with the desire to help people in need. I spend 7 weeks on a temporary contract working in an impatient mental health unit where I experienced first hand the difference in the mental health system compared to what it was like at the time of my brothers death. 

It is hard to believe it has been 20 years since he last walked this earth with us. In those 20 years, we have always honoured him and kept him alive through the memories we hold close to our hearts. 

To honour his life, I'm looking to raise money for the Black Dog Institute in hopes we can assist individuals living with mental health struggles and assist them in receiving much needed support.
