Help me make it meaningful
Mental illness doesn’t discriminate – it affects 1 in 5 Australians every year with symptoms like depression and anxiety. The impact can be devastating, not only for those living with it, but for those around them.
That’s why I’m getting active and raising funds for the Black Dog Institute - to support crucial mental health research and support services that help Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide.
Help me create a meaningful moment for mental health as I work up a sweat, all for a great cause.

My Journey
Monday 25th SepIn the culture I belong to, discussing certain sensitive topics like anxiety, mental health, divorce, miscarriages, and more is considered a taboo. While trivial ailments prompt immediate doctor visits and antibiotics, matters related to mental well-being are often overlooked. There's a stark double standard between addressing physical health versus mental health issues. Even a sneeze will prompt a doctor's visit for a common cold, but showing signs of mental distress is met with indifference.
I've personally experienced this stigma and the struggles associated with it. After multiple pregnancies (approaching double digits) and having one child, I battled anxiety and depression. Seeking help was challenging, and I initially hesitated to take medications. However, through perseverance and trying various strategies such as exercise and meditation, I managed to overcome the worst of it. While the shadows of sadness and palpitations sometimes resurface, I've learned effective coping mechanisms to navigate through them and distance myself from triggering situations.
My intention in sharing this is to reassure others who may be grappling with mental health issues that they are not alone. Help is available, and there are countless individuals facing similar or even more challenging situations. It's okay to ask for help, and visiting a psychologist is perfectly acceptable. They can shed light on the blind spots in our personalities and provide guidance on managing them, be it through medication or coping strategies. Applying these strategies can set you on a healing path.
When we experience physical pain that doesn't subside on its own, we seek medical help, conduct scans, and follow prescribed treatments. Mental health should be treated with the same level of care and importance. Seeking professional assistance or confiding in understanding individuals without fear of judgment or labels is crucial. Instead of being labelled as "crazy," it's vital for others to understand and empathize with our pain, traumas, and grief.
The key takeaway is that if you're struggling with mental health issues, you don't have to face it alone. Reach out for help, talk to someone, and remember, healing is possible.
