The importance of art

Ever since the first world war arts and crafts have been used as a form of ocupational therapy. The quilt in my album was made by returned WW1 veterans suffering physical and psychological injuries at the Royal Staffordshire Infirmary. 

Art therapy is not only a way to find mindfullness, it is a means of obtaining purpose, feeling accomplishment, and discovering a sense of community. 

Art therapy has become such a popular part of treatment for people suffering from mental health conditions, there are now museums that showcase or, in the case of the National Veterans Art Museum in Chicago, dedicated to artwork created by returned service personnel. 

Five years ago during the height (or low) of my then undiagnosed PTSD I attended The Lost Trades Fair. The creativity that can be experienced at this fair gave me a sense of purpose. The people, a sense of community. Carving kept me going through to my diagnosis a few years back. It has played a vital role in my continuing treatment. 

At Lost Trades this weekend I'll be raising money for The Black Dog Institute while sharing my love of carving. 

If you are struggling with mental health, please reach out to someone you trust. You aren't alone. If you can muster up the energy and are interested in lost trades/arts, I encourage you to come along. There will be crowds but if you can make it through that, it is an event that is full of inspiration from a wide range of lost trades artisians. Alternatively, if you are interested but not able to come, I will also be offering free one on one intro to carving sessions for emergency service workers.
