At the end of last year, I lost a close mate to suicide.
It’s something that has stayed with me and has made me realise even more just how important it is that we talk about mental health, particularly when it comes to men.
I know mates who have struggled with their mental health, and I’ve had my own experiences too. The reality is, you never really know what someone is going through behind closed doors.
As blokes, we can be pretty good at saying, “Yeah, I’m alright,” even when we’re not.
Sometimes we just need someone to ask the question, check in, listen, and remind us that we don’t have to deal with everything on our own.
That’s why I’ve decided to shave my head and raise money for the Black Dog Institute and their work around men’s mental health.
For me, this is about more than losing my hair. It’s about remembering my mate, supporting those who are struggling, and helping break down the stigma around men talking about their mental health.
If shaving my head can raise some money, start a conversation, or even encourage one bloke to speak up and say “I’m not okay”, then it’s absolutely worth it.
So here goes…

Thursday 13th Aug Mental health, it doesn’t take sides. My mate posted in our group chat at lunch time, then decided enough was enough that same night. There is no way I would have picked it, no signs no signals no hints… just gone. It was a complete shock to the system, all the standard responses like surely not, it can’t be true, he literally posted at lunch time!!! but the heart breaking facts were it’s real. What happened was place was he in? Did he not feel appreciated enough, what could I have done to help him, why did I not see this. My heart sank, how did he not feel comfortable enough to reach out. Sometimes a bad mental health day can lead to irrational decisions, like I said it doesn’t pick sides it just takes over. If you’re ever feeling not right, reach out, speak up….
