Raising awareness through the power of sport
Mental illness, particularly amongst men, remains a topic we try to avoid, yet it affects 1 in 5 Australians or around 5 million people each year. It not only has a huge impact on those living with it, but affects friends and loved ones doing their best to help.
It is truly hard to believe that suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15 to 44, yet nearly 65% of those experiencing mental health symptoms do not seek treatment.
We have set up this tribute page to remember Vikram, the only son of Jinder and Preet, who was sadly taken by the black dog in 2019.
Vikram represented both the WASPs and UWA hockey clubs, and is fondly remembered by all that played alongside him. For a number of years the two clubs have played a tribute game in Vikram's honour, but we want to do more.
We hope to use the power of each club and the hockey community at large to raise awareness about mental health, encourage young men and women to talk about these issues and ask for help when they need it.
Your donation to the Black Dog Institute will help combat depression amongst young Australians and bring about positive change. Their aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone and help all Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide.
