ABOUT BLACK DOG INSTITUTE
As the only medical research institute in Australia to investigate mental health across the lifespan, our aim is to create a mentally healthier world for everyone. We do this through ‘translational’ research.
Integrating our research studies, education programs, digital tools and apps, clinical services, and public resources to discover new solutions, foster connections and create real-world change.
Our partnerships with people with lived experience, federal, state and local governments, communities, schools, corporate Australia and others in the mental health sector enables us to drive evidence-informed change in mental health where it’s needed most.
Why your support is so important
• 1 in 5 Australians experiences mental illness in any given year
• Roughly 50% of those experiencing mental illness symptoms do not seek treatment
• Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15-44
• Each year mental illness cost Australian businesses $12bn
• By 2030 depression will be the leading health concern worldwide
How your fundraising helps
All funds raised support Black Dog Institute’s mental health research, education programs and support services. We know not everyone is getting the help they need and that there’s no one-size-fits-all solution. This means it’s important for us to continuously investigate the many ways mental health can be improved so we can ultimately help as many people as possible.
Through research and evaluation, we try and find new and better ways of doing things.
Here are just a few of the ways your fundraising helps make a difference:
$21 - can pay for 3 teenagers to take part in our positive psychology program, BITE BACK, to help them build emotional resilience and teach them tools to deal with stress.
$65 - Can help us train community youth presenters to talk about mental health in schools and how to get support.
$120 - Can pay for 15 people to access our MyCompass service service which offers essential support to people living with mild depression and anxiety.
$300 - Can enable us to reach 300 people with our online clinic service.
$500 - Can support a researcher to develop innovative programs to help people with suicidal thoughts seek help when they need it most, saving around 634 people every day.
$1000 - brings together a group of First Nations community members to design an education resource on suicide in their local language.
Need support now?
We care about the mental health needs of everyone, and that’s why our research is dedicated to mental illness and suicide prevention. If you require urgent assistance, please call the following numbers:
· Emergency 000
· Lifeline 13 11 14
· Suicide Call Back Service 1300 659 467
· Kids Helpline 1800 55 1800
· MensLine 1300 78 99 78
There are some additional crisis support services on our website which may also be relevant to your situation.
