Yatala Labour Prison

Help me create a mentally healthier world

I'm standing up to join Team Black Dog to turn ground breaking research into life saving action.

The Activities Team here at Yatala Labour Prison have organised an event for the offenders and staff throughout the Institution. October is Mental Health Month, and to help break down the stigma and raise awareness we’re going to be raising funds for mental health research.

It is widely known that prisoners are more likely to experience higher rates of mental health conditions than the general population. However within the general population of Australia it is reported that:

⁃              8 people die from suicide every day in Australia.

⁃              60% of people will not seek help for mental illnesses.

⁃              More people aged between 15-44 die from suicide than cancer or road accidents.

⁃              Indigenous people in Australia are twice as likely to die by suicide.

It is encouraged for the offenders and staff to participate in either a 20km, 40km or 60km walk throughout the month of October.

With your help in coming together to raise funds, further support can be offered to those living with mental illnesses, as well as investing in research into prevention, treatment and causes of mental illness.
