Jo and I are raising money for Black Dog by doing the Larapinta Challenge 2021! Please support us
As GPs we have both seen the fear and despair associated with staring into they abyss of anxiety, finding yourself in the depths of a depression or the terror of a psychotic event. In our personal lives we have both been touched by the tentacles of mental illness and have remarked at the difficulties in getting the right care at the right time.
Last year has been a year like no other in terms of the mental health issues that have been triggered or revealed by the pressures and anxiety of a pandemic and economic fallout.
Services like Lifeline, Beyond Blue and the Black Dog Institute have been inundated by people needing support.
We have decided to join the Black Dog’s Larapinta challenge, hiking up to 20kms a day in Central Australia over 5 days in the beautiful West MacDonnell Ranges to help raise much needed funds for this support service
The funds we raise will support all of the Institute’s work, as well as contribute in particular to the expansion and continued national rollout of their education workshops, mental health training and community awareness programs. These programs are vital, particularly in regional and rural areas, to ensure that all Australians have access to the care, information and resources that they need. Your generous donation will help to:
• Deliver mental health training workshops to GPs, mental health nurses, Indigenous health workers, psychologist and other allied health professionals so that they can accurately diagnose, treat and manage their patients with mental illness and suicidal thoughts.
• Continue to develop and deliver up-to-date and best practice mental health resources for public access throughout Australia.
• Expand the network of volunteer lived experience presenters, and train them to effectively deliver mental health literacy and awareness programs to their communities, in particular in those parts of the country where access to help and resources may be limited.
• Continue to build their youth-based education programs and help them to roll them out in Australian high schools nationally.
