Mullets For Mental Health 2021

Science. Compassion. Action

I'm all ears for Black Dog Institute's Mullets for Mental Health.

1 in 5 of us will experience symptoms of mental illness in any given year. In Australia that’s around 5 million people. And roughly 60% of these people won’t seek help.

For the month of September I will be sporting a mullet and raising funds to show support for mental health research.

Please donate and support my mullet and empower everyone in Australia to look after their mental health.

Monumental Change for Mental Health

Wednesday 21st Jul
My sister Miriam has had hair below her elbows for my entire life. She’s cut her hair in support of Mental Health! Might not be a mullet - but I am super proud of Miriam for making such a huge change and I think she looks pretty spectacular! She’s donated her hair to Sustainable Salons, and the hairdresser (who’d she never met before) ended up being an old friend of mine by the name of Amanda! Two degrees of separation and a whole lot of love!

A braid for a good cause!

Tuesday 20th Jul
The braid my sister Miriam has donated to Sustainable Salon as she supports my Mullets for Mental Health fundraiser campaign.

My sister has had a little trim!

There’s an attachment we have to hair; it shapes part of our identity, prompts conversation, and can be something we pride ourselves in maintaining.

My sister Miriam is in the Australian Navy, and she has, for my entire life, always had long hair.

Well she has had a little haircut, and she is teaming up with me to share this fundraiser!

This braid has now been mailed to Sustainable Salons for their wig program. She also threw in a second (48 cm) ponytail from a previous haircut too, so they'll be getting around 110 cm to play with.

Miriam have plenty of hair left and can still achieve a respectable military bun (to match her Navy uniform).  Whilst she can't do the Mullet Challenge (I think she is relieved), she is sharing a photo of her hair that has been posted away.

Thank you Miriam for supporting me and for sharing a photo of the braid!!

Mullets for Mental Health

Friday 16th Jul
Just a few hours into this fundraising journey and I am already overwhelmed by the support of my friends.
Mental health is something that we all need to get better at talking about, be attentive listeners and supporters of those who struggle with the Black Dog; often in silence.

As we raise funds and start the conversation, I’ll share some stories of my own and celebrate the support I’ve had along the way.

First shout out goes to my Mum, for taking me to the doctors as a very young teenager to get my first diagnosis for a mental health disorder.

I reckon is was around then that I realised the need for having nature in my life was part of my own therapy and recovery at that point in time. Being outside, the cold air, crisp wind and fresh smells - they all gave me strength.

Did you know that the Black Dog Institute have free podcasts that explore different insights into mental health? Head to their main website for more information!

Stay safe, share Mullets for Mental Health and check in on those around you.
