Help me make it meaningful
At 2:00 am on Friday the 29th of November, I will be running 100 miles (161km) and 5000m of elevation (around 31,000 stairs) up and around Mount Kosciuszko to support Mental Health. Mental illness doesn’t discriminate – it affects 1 in 5 Australians every year with symptoms like depression and anxiety. The impact can be devastating, not only for those living with it, but for those around them.
The Black Dog Institute is the only not-for-profit mental health research organisation in Australia that investigates mental health across the lifespan, from childhood to adulthood. Through science, compassion, and action, Black Dog conduct translational research to create evidence-based solutions and generate real-world change.
So, why am I doing this run?
Many of you who are reading this have followed along this journey - from when I posted my first 5km run, to completing my first half marathon, failed and successful marathons, the 100km feat I completed last year, and the many PBs I gathered along the way.
The reason I am running this race isn’t the same reason that I started running. I began this journey to change my life, I wanted something bigger and better, and I found salvation from turmoil in running. This race means more than just a personal feat or raising money for charity, although those are wonderful benefits. This race is proof that anything is possible if you keep moving forward. I did not think when I first started running that ever in a million years, I’d end up some lunatic who wants to run 100 miles, but that’s just the beauty of keeping on. You really don’t know what the future holds for you. Life gets hard, whether that’s in business, school, relationships, work, or mental health. I am certain that there will be challenges along your path, but it is the opportunity to overcome these challenges that make the game worth playing. There is no triumph without defeat, no high without the low, no light without dark.
I know what I am about to do is out of my league. The 60km past 100km is all uncharted territory, and combining it with such significant elevation, well... it’s gonna be something. Nelson Mandela said, “there is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living”, and I think it is fundamental to all of us to find that limit. In search of this, you will find that there is much more to you and to this experience we call ‘life,’ than your current situation. Where you are might be a difficult situation, it might seem like there is no way out and that this could be it for you. I’ve been there before. By stepping into it you will discover that you can pretty much always take another step and the lower you are, the better it can get.
The only way out is through. Step into the fire.
In light of this, I’m raising funds for The Black Dog Institute to support crucial mental health research and support services that help Australians impacted by mental illness and suicide.
