Moonlight Marathon Training Session - Hen and Chicken Bay
I thought I would take the opportunity to explore parts of Sydney I'm not that familiar with as part of my preparation for the Black Dog Moonlight Marathon.
So this weekend's longer walk took my training buddy (Ralphie the Cavoodle) and I from our base in Five Dock, around Hen and Chicken Bay passing through Henry Lawson Park and into the Old Quarantine Station, before heading around to Battersea Park and back home again.
I had no idea the Quarantine Station used to be located in Abbotsford. According to the information board, it moved here in 1916 after previously being located at Bradley's Head where the Taronga Zoo is now located. Many of the old buildings are still standing - cattle yards, dog kennels, horse stables, the old piggery and the cattery. It remained on the shores of Hen and Chicken Bay until 1980. By then the locals were fed up with the noise and smell, and it relocated once again to Wallgrove.
All up it was around 8 or 9km. Not a bad effort for our first long walk session.
15 weeks to go :)
Help me create a mentally healthier world
On the 12th October this year, I’m lacing up my walking shoes and taking on a half marathon for the Black Dog Institute
I’m raising funds to help change these statistics:
- 1 in 5 Australians experience a mental illness each year
- 65% of those do not seek help
- Suicide is the leading cause of death for Australians aged 15-45
The leading cause of death! That’s unbelievable and it needs to change.
Together, we can remove the stigma around mental illness and create a mentally healthier world. Please donate today!
