My Why – Supporting the Black Dog Institute
Wednesday 28th May
Mental health has been a deeply personal journey for me. For years, I took part in One Foot Forward, a walk and run initiative by the Black Dog Institute, and it became a powerful way for me to support mental health awareness while also helping manage my own wellbeing. Every step felt meaningful—not just for others, but for myself.
But during my last One Foot Forward, I hit a physical wall. After reaching 10,000 steps a day, I was in serious pain. I knew something wasn’t right. After a series of scans—X-rays, ultrasounds, and a CT scan—my world shifted. I was diagnosed with arthritis, tendonitis, and bursitis in both hips, arthritis in my lower back, inflammation in my pelvis, and more recently, arthritis in my right knee. The physical pain made it impossible to continue the walks I once loved and looked forward to. That loss hurt more than I expected—it was a part of my healing.
I've also carried emotional pain for much of my life, having struggled with my mental health from a young age due to personal traumas. But I’ve always tried to face these challenges with a positive attitude, believing that no matter what, I could still make a difference.
Even though I can no longer take part in One Foot Forward physically, I still want to support the cause. That’s why I’ve chosen to use my platform, Oh My Glass, to raise funds for the Black Dog Institute through my handmade products and special mental health game nights. It’s my way of continuing to support the life-saving work they do.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read my story and understand my "why." Whether you buy my products, donate, share, or simply hold space for mental health awareness, you’re helping make a real difference.
Much love and positive vibes, Mel 💚
