Help me create a mentally healthier world

I'm standing up to join Team Black Dog to turn ground breaking research into life saving action.

Mental illness affects 1 in 5 Australians every year, with the most common being depression and anxiety. Mental illness doesn’t discriminate. It affects people from all walks of life — individuals, families, workplaces and communities.

Back From The Edge Details

Monday 24th Oct
So I have had many questions about who I am, as well as wanting details about my bike and what I am planning.
So here I go
My name is Tony Smith I am 60yrs old and happy married with 2 awesome children (now adults ) I live in Perth and currently work FIFO for FLSmidth doing shutdowns etc as a Mechanical Fitter
I have ridden motorcycle on & off for most of my life.
My current motorcycle is a 1993 Kawasaki ZXR750 L1 which I have fully rebuild and now has the 1993 Suzuka 8hr winning bikes livery which was the Itoham Racing Team ZXR750.
The bike is very much stock standard with only a few minor changes.
My aim is next March 2023 to ride across Australia from Perth to the far coast of Victoria Mallacoota & back
Covering a estimated 10,000km +
The challenges will no doubt be many as my bike is not exactly built comfort wise for long distance riding, nor is it made to have racks etc fitted to carry my cloths, camping gear etc and I have a range of around 300km per tank of fuel so there will be many fuel stops.
Setting up so I can camp most of the time will be tricky but is a must as my budget doesn’t allow for anything else.
Combine all of the above then add the fact that I have suffered with Fibromyalgia for the last 20yrs and have a DRG Inplant to help control my pain levels this trip is not going to be easy.
But people that know me know that I don’t give up easy and if I set my mind to do something well that’s exactly what I’m going to do, as this is in honour of my lost mate Mark there is no way I am going to let him down.
Stay tuned because very soon I hope to be able to break some news in the way of a Company who is going to add in to our donations in a way that could be a real game changer to my target so stay tuned

Back from the Edge Story

Friday 21st Oct
What’s the reason for my ride
This ride started out as a catch up holiday with family & friends in Victoria.
While planning my trip I was having regular talks with some life long mates.
I had only just had a long talk with my good mate Mark, joking about what we could get up to and having a laugh. Days later I got the news that Mark was gone, he had taken his own life. This is a few months ago now but myself like others are still struggling to comprehend the what, why, how’s and that Mark is actually gone.
Depression & suicide are not exactly new to me having dealt with depression for many years and have been in some very dark places and at one time attempting to also take my own life.
I was very lucky in that I failed, I got another chance, and although it was a long time ago now I have never openly spoken about it an admitted & talk about it, neither had Mark.
This has to change, we need to be comfortable talking about our feelings, being open and seeking help. Also depression, suicide needs to be better understood by the general public.
It is in Marks memory I have decide to run Back From The Edge both in memory of Mark & to help raise awareness of Depression & Suicide and understanding as well as raise much needed funds for the Black Dog Institute.
Please stay tuned as l keep preparing for my ride & I post regular updates and details about this fundraiser but in the meantime please please start donating and help me & others to better understand depression & helping people in need.

Mark was an almost life long friend (since teenagers) even though it may have been years between catch-ups. The last couple of years has been hard with lockdowns etc, not that it happened in Murtoa but I truely think that Mark was very impacted by the passing of Reps in similar circumstances .. look forward to following your ride and catching up with you along the way somewhere 🙂
