In May this year, I didn’t even own a bike and suddenly I found myself handing over an uncomfortable amount of $ to a bike shop whilst explaining I won't ever be seen in lycra.
In October, I will ride from Manly to Byron Bay - around 780km over seven days and still not in lycra.
I knew when we came up with Ride4Lives that it was going to be a massive challenge, and that was the point. But I’m not sure I fully appreciated just how much work it would take to get myself ready for it.
For the last few months, training has become a fairly significant part of my life. I’m currently riding five or six times a week, alongside three or four gym sessions, with the weekends increasingly involving long days on the bike, plenty of hills and then getting back on the bike the following morning to do it all again. I won't lie, I am absolutely knackered, but that's also what makes it worthwhile.
Mental health affects so many of us - our families including mine, our friends, our colleagues and our communities.
There are mornings when the alarm goes off and the last thing I want to do is get back on the bike. There are hills where I've seriously questioned what on earth I've signed myself up for but then I remind myself why we're doing it.
